Summer Filippopoulos

INTRODUCTION

Summer’s story is one of courage, passion, and the pursuit of creativity. From managing AV setups at weddings to leading her own event planning company, she has redefined what it means to create memorable experiences. Driven by a desire to innovate and inspire, Summer shares her journey from corporate life to founding Eventive Planning—a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and a mission to empower other women entrepreneurs.

The Aha Moment that Changed Everything

Summer’s journey into the world of event planning began unexpectedly. While working for an AV company specializing in weddings, she found herself drawn to the emotional impact of her work. It wasn’t just about setting up equipment; it was about creating meaningful, lasting memories for people during some of their most significant moments. “It wasn’t about making a sale but rather crafting experiences that could be cherished forever,” Summer recalls.

However, as a new mother, the late nights and demanding schedule

of the wedding industry became increasingly challenging. Seeking balance and a fresh perspective, Summer transitioned to a corporate AV company, where she took on a leadership role in the entertainment and decor division. This move opened new doors, allowing her to build invaluable relationships and discover a passion for crafting innovative and themed experiences.

After seven years in the corporate world, Summer felt the urge to push her creative boundaries even further. Driven by a desire to lead her own team and inspire others in the industry, she took the bold step of launching her own event planning company, Eventive Planning. “It was a leap fueled by the desire to push boundaries, lead my own team, and hopefully inspire others in the industry to grow in their own unique ways,” she explains. Now, her mission is clear: to create exceptional experiences and guide her team toward confidence and success in an ever-evolving industry.

Summer’s Journey: Insights from an Inspiring Entrepreneur Q&A

1. From Weddings to Corporate: How Did You Realize Event Planning Was Your Calling?

Summer: My journey in the event industry started when I was offered a position with an AV company specializing in weddings. It was there that I discovered a deep connection to creating meaningful, lasting memories for such significant moments in people’s lives. It wasn’t about making a sale but rather crafting experiences that could be cherished forever. As time went on, I had my first child, and managing the late nights became difficult. I realized I needed a change, and about seven years later, I transitioned to a corporate AV company, where I took on a leadership role in the entertainment and decor division.

During that time, I developed invaluable relationships with industry leaders, clients, and colleagues. I also found a new passion for creating more innovative and themed experiences, which allowed me to express my creativity in a way that excited me. After another seven years, I felt the urge to challenge myself further and take the next step in my career by starting my own event planning company. It was a leap fueled by the desire to push boundaries, lead my own team, and hopefully inspire others in the industry to grow in their own unique ways. My mission now is to continue creating exceptional experiences and guiding my team toward confidence and success in this ever-evolving industry.

2. Describe Yourself in Three Words and Share Your Secret to Managing Stress.

Summer: I’d say I’m dedicated, devoted, and passionate. Running a business can be demanding, but I make it a priority to manage my mental health. I find that going to the gym or getting outdoors for a walk or jog with my favorite music really helps clear my mind. Additionally, spending quality time with my family is something I hold dear, so I carve out time in my schedule to ensure I’m present for them. I organize my day by prioritizing tasks in my calendar, making sure to balance the late hours and daily demands with what truly matters to me.

3. What Strategies Have Helped You Grow Your Business?

Summer: Honesty, dedication, and building genuine relationships have been key to my business growth. I believe in showing up fully for every client, whether their event is small or large. I treat each event as if it were my own, and that level of personal investment has been crucial in forming lasting connections. Organization and communication are also essential. I prioritize tasks to stay organized and make sure I respond promptly to everyone—clients, colleagues, and industry partners. Trust is at the core of all my relationships, and over time, many of my clients have become friends.

4. How Has Community Support and Networking Impacted Your Business?

Summer: Community support and networking have been absolutely essential for the growth of my business. I strongly believe in giving back, whether it’s by showing up for local events, fundraising, or supporting a cause that’s meaningful to me. The impact of community involvement is powerful—it always comes full circle. This connection to the community has allowed me to grow, not only by building relationships but also by helping promote and support other local businesses and entrepreneurs. It’s about creating mutually beneficial relationships where we lift each other up and collaborate.

5. What Advice Would You Give to Women Considering Starting Their Own Business?

Summer: Always stay true to yourself. Stand up for yourself and don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. Listen more than you speak—you’ll be surprised how much you can learn that way. Be confident and believe in yourself. There will be moments of doubt, but never let fear hold you back from your mission or your goals. Trust in your vision, and always speak up for yourself.

6. Who Are Your Biggest Role Models and How Have They Influenced Your Journey?

Summer: My mother stands out as a significant role model. She was not only a mother of two but also an entrepreneur who owned her own hair salon. She managed the balance of work, home, and family effortlessly. Beyond her, my role models include my daughter, my son, and my husband, who continually inspire me with their love and support. So many people have touched my life in meaningful ways, shaping who I am today.

7. What Quote or Mantra Keeps You Motivated on Your Business Journey?

Summer: Two quotes have had a significant impact on me. The first is, “It’s not the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away.” The second is by Albert Einstein: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Both of these quotes push me to create memorable moments for my clients and to always challenge myself to grow.
